Picturesque by day and dazzling by night, Lake Tekapo/Takapō is part of a UNESCO Dark Sky Reserve, making it the perfect spot for stargazing.

Lake Tekapo is nestled in the heart of New Zealand’s South Island. The lake lies at the foot of the Southern Alps, which rise to a height of 3 kilometres. New Zealand’s highest mountain, Mt Cook (Aoraki), is a short drive away and rises to 3,753m (12,313ft).

Lake Tekapo/Takapō is about three hour’s drive south-west of Christchurch in the Mackenzie Basin. The township faces north across the remarkable turquoise-coloured lake to the mountainous drama of the Southern Alps. Lake Tekapo/Takapō gets its intense milky-turquoise colour from the fine rock-flour (ground by glaciers) which is suspended in the water.
